Enjoy Your Summer!

Hello my dear friends in Christ. I’m really excited. Why? Because summer is near! The weather outside is warm and delightful. The bright blue sky and various shades of flower are inspiring. The birds singing outside my window this morning are refreshing. This time of year makes me want to get down on my knees and thank my wonderful Creator for the miraculous gift of life.

After a long wet winter and busy school year, I know that many of you are virtually bursting at the seams with enthusiasm, too. Some of you are graduating and moving into a new phase of life. Some of you are making plans to go to far away places and experience new and exciting things. Others of you are simply anticipating what will hopefully become a peaceful and restful summer at home. No matter what your personal plans are for the summer, may God grant them to you and may you find great joy in them!

If you are like me, then you might be looking for some kind of permission from God; a warrant which might allow you feel like God is supporting you in your endeavor to enjoy the summer. Well, if you are, then I have good news for you: I found it!

In the third chapter of Ecclesiastes, after sullenly declaring that everything on God’s green earth is a vanity and a chasing after wind, Solomon then wisely says, “So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God!” In a nutshell, Solomon knows that life is short, plans rarely come to fruition and death will be upon us before we know it.

Friends, you don’t need anymore exposition than this: leave all your troubles behind! Get out there this summer and enjoy your lives while you still can! Get out there and embrace those transitions you face with joy! Experience those new things coming your way as if there are no more tomorrows! Enjoy a good opportunity for rest when you get one! Do that, and you will be among the wisest of the wise.

May God bless each and every one of you and may you all experience that peace that surpasses all understanding; the peace that can come only from knowing and loving our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
